#Tao Te Ching 80

An ideal nation would be small,
With a small population.
It would be simple, with
No need of complications.
The citizens would so treasure life
That they would be too busy
Living to move away, and

Though there would be boats
And carriages, the people would
Be too busy living
To make any use of them.

Those citizens would forget writing
And go back to knotting string
To remember things by.

They would consider
The simplest food best;
The plainest clothing
Beautiful; the simplest
Homes enough, and simple
Enjoyments enough.

For those people,
Should there be
Another nation in sight,
Even to hearing its singing
Birds and barking dogs,
The people would take
No interest in the journey,
Even unto old age.
