#poem Marching at the Rally

Sunny says religion
Has given her a hard time
For most of eighty years

Religion telling her who
To marry; how to work;
What can’t, what can’t;

And then there was her
Sister couldn’t get a
Divorce, couldn’t get shut

Of her alcoholic husband.
Sunny says religion
Sure can keep you down,

Being a woman and all.
Sunny tells me as we
March for a cause—I

Guess because I’m
Wearing a collar—these
Young ones have got

To know the cost,
Have got to know what
It means to can’t.
